Griddle: custom grids for the Rive editor

Always-on-top panel that authors snappable grid guides in the Rive editor through its MCP server: 14 grid types, real path geometry, no AI. macOS and Windows.

Client: IVG Design

Griddle: Custom grids x Rive

What it is

A tiny always-on-top panel that draws grids inside the Rive editor. It talks to the editor's own MCP server, deterministically, with no AI agent involved.

What it does

Grids drawn by scripts are computed at render time, so the Rive editor's vertex snapping never sees them. Griddle instead creates real `PointsPath` geometry through the editor's tools, so every line endpoint and lattice point is snappable.

Features

  • 14 grid types: rectangular, dot, baseline, brick; isometric, triangular, diamond, hexagonal, polar; one- and two-point perspective; golden ratio, rule of thirds, layout columns
  • Subdivisions, cell gutters, artboard picker with auto-fit and a custom shape name
  • Optional separate styling for major and minor lines
  • Open (not closed) segment paths so dash effects and length-based tooling measure correctly
  • Path-count caps with auto-doubled spacing, and Remove last to undo what it just made

Capabilities

Layout grids, perspective guides and composition guides that you can snap to, authored in seconds instead of by hand.

Compatibility

  • macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows (MSI/NSIS installers)
  • Needs the Rive editor running with a file open; talks to the editor MCP on 127.0.0.1:9791
  • macOS builds are unsigned: right-click Open on first launch

Availability

Free, public repository (ivg-design/griddle), v1.0.5 released 2026-07-04.

Under the hood

Tauri with plain JavaScript grid generation and a small Rust command that posts one `path_editor createShapes` call.
